Reflecting on Legal Studies, Volunteering, and Studying Abroad in Spain

As a student in LAH, I have had the opportunity to engage in courses and classroom discussions dedicated to my specific area of interest and future career plans. In two different LAH-specific electives, LAH 350: Paper Chase - Law School & Life of Law and LAH 340L: Legal Internships, I have learned about the intricacies of the 1L experience and the rule of law in general. The classes are taught by an actual, practicing attorney that like many of the other faculty members in the program is always willing to lend a helping hand, whether that is how best to make an argument in an upcoming paper or simply advice on life. I couldn’t be more thankful to have such experienced and caring mentors to look to when needed that I may never have met without courtesy of this honors program.

In addition to my participation in the classroom, I also volunteer my time as a Student Ambassador in weekly informative sessions for prospective students led by our faculty advisors. As an ambassador, I and a team of my fellow peers offer perspective to current high school seniors and other future applicants during these sessions. Because LAH has given me so much, I greatly enjoy providing any assistance I can to individuals in the same position I was in only a few years ago. I love my program, departments, organizations, and the city in which they are located, so it is a true joy getting to explain this love and convince other individuals why they should love them too. Not to mention, it is reassuring to hear every week that the drive to pursue higher education, and more specifically, a liberal arts education is alive and well after such a tumultuous time for society.

However, the epitome of my gratitude and appreciation for LAH can be summed up by my experience while studying abroad. This past summer I had the privilege of traveling to Santander, Spain with the Spanish Department here at the university, and it is without a doubt the most spectacular experience of my undergrad. As someone who had never even flown internationally, the entire trip I was in awe of all that I got to experience for the first time: a new culture, language, humor, history, sights, and more! If it had not been for generous funds provided by LAH, I may not have been able to participate in such a once in a lifetime experience. All in all, this community has been by every standard enthusiastically supportive of all of my goals and plans for the future.

I’m saddened to be graduating this upcoming May, but confident in my abilities that have been shaped and improved in large part from my involvement in LAH.
