Advising

Academic advising is integral to fulfilling the teaching and learning mission of The University of Texas at Austin. Through academic advising, students learn to think critically about their roles and responsibilities as students and to prepare to be critical and ethical thinkers and actors in both local and global communities. Academic advising engages students beyond their own world views, while acknowledging their individual characteristics, values, and motivations as they enter, move through, and exit the Forty Acres.

Your academic advisor can provide information about:

  • The MALS major and minor
  • University and College of Liberal Arts requirements
  • Course descriptions
  • Registration and the add/drop process
  • Petition requests
  • Internships and possible careers
  • Graduation preparation
  • One-on-one counseling in academic and related issues

Meet your Academic Advisor!

Lucy Vélez, Senior Academic Advisor

I feel lucky to be able to work with y’all in MALS as your senior academic advisor as well as with students in AADS, AAS, RIM, and WGSS. I am UT COLA, University of Arizona, and UT COE alum with degrees in Liberal Arts, Latin American Studies and Cultural Studies in Education.  I am also a borderlands Tejana, and mom to two very cool kids. I am easy to find, you may contact me via email (lucy.velez@austin.utexas.edu) or schedule a virtual or in-person appointment. My office location is RLP 4.412.

You can schedule an advising appointment with me using Bookings. Meetings can take place through Zoom or in-person. Students are encouraged to run and review an Interactive Degree Audit (IDA) before the advising meeting. The audit will allow you to see which Core, College, Major, Minor, or Certificate requirements you need to complete toward your degree.

Meet your Undergraduate Advisor!

Rachel González-Martin, Undergraduate Advisor

Many students, and their families, ask a very important question regarding the major: What can I do with a degree in Mexican American and Latina/o Studies? I counsel and advise students in developing their individual degree plan so that it will prepare them most effectively for the career they choose. We also discuss the numerous graduate and professional school opportunities that are provided by a Bachelor of Arts degree in MALS. Are you interested in preparing for graduate school, or learning how to discuss your passions and turn them into research? Maybe you want help choosing between MALS classes and better understand the area specializations offered through different MALS classes? I'm here to help! I encourage you to also check out our Courses in MALS page to review all of our currently offered courses and get more information on how "Passion Paths" can provide a roadmap for which courses best match your individual and career interests!

Schedule an appointment to chat with me at rvgonzal@austin.utexas.edu.
