Advising

Academic advising is integral to fulfilling the teaching and learning mission of The University of Texas at Austin. Through academic advising, students learn to think critically about their roles and responsibilities as students and to prepare to be critical and ethical thinkers and actors in both local and global communities. Academic advising engages students beyond their own world views, while acknowledging their individual characteristics, values, and motivations as they enter, move through, and exit the Forty Acres.

Your academic advisor, Luis Guevara, can provide information about

  1. the MALS major and minor
  2. University and College of Liberal Arts requirements
  3. course descriptions
  4. assists with registration and the add/drop process
  5. helps with petition requests
  6. provides information on internships and possible careers
  7. graduation preparation
  8. offers one-on-one counseling in academic and related issues

Book an Advising Appointment

You can schedule an advising appointment with Luis Guevara using Bookings. Meetings can take place through Zoom or in-person. Students are encouraged to run and review an Interactive Degree Audit (IDA) before the advising meeting. The audit will allow you to see which Core, Flag, College, Major, Minor or Certificate requirements you need to complete toward your degree.

College of Liberal Arts

Many students, and their families, ask a very important question regarding the major: What can I do with a degree in Mexican American and Latina/o Studies? We counsel and advise students in developing their individual degree plan so that it will prepare them most effectively for the career they choose. We also discuss the numerous graduate and professional school opportunities that are provided by a Bachelor of Arts degree in MALS.

Your Undergraduate Advisor, Dr. Rachel González-Martin can provide information about the possible professional pathways you can take with your degree in MALS. Are you interested in preparing for graduate school, or learning how to discuss your passions and turn them into research? Maybe you want help choosing between MALS classes and better understand the area specializations offered through different MALS classes? Dr. González-Martin is here to help!

Schedule an appointment to chat with Dr. González-Martin by email: rvgonzal@austin.utexas.edu or visit her in drop-in office hours at GWB 2.314 Mondays 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm, Thursdays 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.
