Major or Minor
Major Requirements
Our classes are designed to help students think critically about the lived experiences and issues Latinas/os face in the United States. Students learn about topics relating, but not limited to, gender and sexuality, history, food, religion and spirituality, delving deep into Latina/o culture and customs to explore “What does it mean to be a Latina/o in the U.S.?” Students also have the opportunity to study immigration, education, health care, law and policymaking in order to better understand the organization of our society and address the issues that have the greatest impact on our communities.
Total Hours Required: 27 including 18 hours in residence.
- MAS 301: Introduction to Mexican American and Latina/o Studies
- Two Lower-Division MALS courses
- Four Upper-Division MALS courses
- MAS 375: Internship or an Education Abroad experience (either earned in major)
- MAS 378: Capstone Seminar
Core, Flag and Liberal Arts requirements may be fulfilled by courses used for the Mexican American and Latina/o Studies major; see advisor for details.
Liberal Arts requirement for intermediate proficiency in a foreign language must be fulfilled by courses in Spanish, Portuguese or an Indigenous Language; see advisor for details.

Minor Requirements
Students in majors other than Mexican American and Latina/o Studies can pursue a transcript-recognized minor in MALS.
Total Hours Required: 15 including 9 hours in residence.
